For the last 15 years, Forward Progress’s Founder has been a member of ITE’s Transportation Planning and Complete Streets Councils’ Executive Committees, Chairing the Transportation Planning Council 2014-2016 and then the Complete Streets Council from 2018-2020. During that time, Mr. Marcus oversaw the development and publication of several industry best practice guidance documents. Mr. Marcus was also appointed to various task forces and ITE initiatives, such as the ITE Vision Zero Task Force. He continues to be an active member of the Complete Streets Council Executive Committee.
An important aspect of leading the ITE Complete Streets Council was improving collaboration between ITE and its traffic engineering focus with NACTO’s progressive approach to urban street design and operations. Mr. Marcus invited NACTO staff to participate on ITE’s Complete Streets Council Executive Committee and work together on emerging trends in our industry. ITE’s Complete Streets Council supported NACTO’s launch of the NACTO Transit Street Design Guide, and published a supplement to the guide to help advance the application of the guide for practitioners. Mr. Marcus was a co-author of this supplement. He also helped NACTO’s guidebook launch by co-presenting with NACTO staff at several national conferences.
This partnership continued with the identification of curbside management as an emerging trend and industry challenge in 2016. Mr. Marcus and Matthew Roe from NACTO initiated research on progressive curbside management program needs, methods, and strategies, and launched NACTO’s Curb Appeal: Curbside Management Strategies for Improving Transit Reliability guidance document and ITE’s Curbside Management Practitioners Guide. Mr. Roe and Mr. Marcus presented at numerous NACTO, ITE, and TRB conferences to raise awareness of this emerging challenge in our industry.
